Why this technical divide is crucial
An infinity pool project combines two distinct responsibilities: defining the vision, proportions, materials and hydraulic feasibility and executing the work, coordinating trades and ensuring compliance with structural standards.
Too often these two aspects are conflated. Starting directly with a contractor risks compromises, unexpected costs, and a pool that functions technically but feels disconnected from the house or garden.
Roles
Pool contractor
A pool contractor is an individual or company specialising in the physical construction of swimming pools. Their role is to handle excavation, plumbing, electrical works, and the installation of equipment.
For an infinity pool, however, building skills alone are not enough. The overflow edge must be precise to the millimetre, the structure perfectly levelled, and the pool aligned with its surroundings – requirements that go beyond standard construction know-how.
Pool designer
A pool designer plans and conceptualises the pool – balancing technical feasibility with aesthetics and client expectations. They account for the architecture of the home, the surrounding environment and the intended use of the pool.
For infinity and overflow pools in particular, architectural integration and hydraulic balance must be anticipated from the first sketches. Without this stage, the risk of structural or hydraulic issues increases significantly once construction begins.
Pool project manager
Between design and construction, there is often a third responsibility: project management. This role bridges the gap between drawings and execution – coordinating trades, verifying tolerances, and ensuring that what has been designed is faithfully built.
Pool architect
The term ‘pool architect’ is sometimes used to describe a professional who combines all three responsibilities – design, technical plans and construction oversight – within a single engagement.
The title is not regulated, but the scope it implies is precise: defining the project, documenting it fully, and ensuring that execution follows the design intent from groundbreak to completion. For complex overflow pools, where tolerances are measured in millimetres, this integrated approach is the most reliable framework.
Morana’s advice
If the pool is part of the site, not a piece set in the garden, call a designer.
The designer sets the shape, the level, the edge and how the pool meets the house and the view. A contractor builds that file. He does not make those choices.
Pool designer vs pool contractor: which comes first?
The contractor is local, but the designer is global. On international projects, the construction team reflects the geography – local builders, regional contractors, and trade networks specific to the territory. The design engineering does not.
A set of precise hydraulic drawings and structural plans performs identically whether the construction crew executing them is in France, Catalonia, or Mauritania. The designer defines the strict millimetre tolerances; the contractor simply meets them on site.
This sequence is why design engineering must always come first. It is the only element of a luxury pool project that travels seamlessly. By securing a comprehensive technical file before appointing a builder, you ensure that the fluid dynamics, concrete structures, and alignment levels remain uncompromised, regardless of which local contractor pours the shell.
Case study: an infinity pool in Catalonia
One of our projects in Catalonia illustrates this perfectly. The pool was not built by a specialised contractor, but by the same company that was constructing the house. The hydraulic network was installed by a local plumber. And yet, the result was flawless: a perfectly level infinity pool that functions reliably to this day.
Why? Because they were working from detailed design drawings and hydraulic plans. With this technical foundation, even non-specialised teams were able to deliver a world-class pool.

Our experience
What truly matters is not who pours the concrete, but how well the project has been conceived. Most of our international projects have not been built by pool contractors, but by general construction companies, sometimes teams who had never worked on an infinity pool before. What made the difference was not their background, but the precision of the plans.
We draw. A local company builds.
The drawings are the file the site follows. See how that set is produced.
Frequently asked questions: pool designer and contractor
What does a pool designer do?
A pool designer defines the project before any excavation: layout, levels, sections, edge details and the full hydraulic circuit. The result is a set of drawings precise enough for any competent builder to work from.
How is a pool designer different from a contractor?
The designer decides what will be built and how it must perform. The contractor builds it on site, following those drawings. One carries the engineering, the other the execution.
Do I need both?
For an infinity or overflow pool, yes. The edge must be level to within a few millimetres and the balance tank sized to the exact water volume displaced. Most local builders can execute these details, provided they receive drawings that specify them.
