A Balinese Mirror in Nueva Andalucía
Morning light in southern Spain doesn’t just arrive. It seeps in. First the roofs, then the palms, then the stone under your feet. By mid-morning, the heat sits still over the garden. Almost too still.
In that garden — located in the exclusive enclave of Nueva Andalucía, Marbella — lies a perfect mirror of water. The edge bends in soft, natural arcs. This project holds a deeply historic place in our hearts: it was our very first build in Marbella. A beginning that, without us knowing at the time, would open the door to many more high-end engineering projects in this beautiful corner of Andalusia.
The owners, a Swedish couple who had once lived in Bali, came to Morana Water Design with a very precise vision in mind — yet one they couldn’t quite put into words. They carried vivid memories and distinct feelings from their years in Indonesia, moments of serene luxury they wanted to re-create. Translating those abstract feelings into exact structural lines, hydraulic levels, and premium materials was our job.
The Art of Hand-Crafted Engineering
Access to the Marbella property presented immediate, severe logistical challenges. Tight residential streets, sharp turns, and narrow villa boundaries meant there was absolutely no room for large construction machinery. Most of the heavy structural work had to be executed entirely by hand — wheelbarrow by wheelbarrow, stone by stone.
While this constrained environment slowed the timeline, it forced us to approach each structural step with extreme care — measuring twice, sometimes three times, before pouring concrete or aligning plumbing systems. We kept returning to the design sketches, softening a curve here, adjusting an angle there. Little by little, the structural engineering began to perfectly match the serene sanctuary the clients carried in their minds.
Designing for Silence, Texture and Slowness
The clients explicitly requested a free-form zero-edge pool. They wanted the kind of layout where the water doesn’t abruptly stop at a traditional coping stone, but seems to slide seamlessly into the terrace itself — mimicking the natural edge of a tropical beach where water and sand merge. To preserve this visual purity, there could be no visible overflow grilles or mechanical disruptions.
We engineered a custom, hidden slot overflow directly into the stone perimeter. We calibrated the hydraulic flow so that the water slides away evenly across the curved lip, maintaining a flawless mirror effect even during light summer breezes. The organic layout follows the gentle shape of a shoreline you might walk barefoot at low tide.
At one end of the basin, a custom wooden bridge leads across to a private central island. The timber was specifically treated to withstand both water saturation and intense Andalusian noon heat. On the island, the dense tropical foliage acts as a natural acoustic barrier, dampening the sound of the surrounding streets. Subtle, integrated waterfalls cascade from the island’s edge — a soft, constant murmur that frames the entire sensory experience.
A Masterpiece that Shapes the Property Value
The villa’s heavy carved pavilion beams greeted us on our very first site visit. Darkened by time, the hardwood released its rich scent in the mid-morning heat. It belonged there — yet the space around it had felt unfinished, waiting for its center. This free-form zero-edge pool became that missing center, anchoring the entire outdoor living space.
Years later, when the villa went on the luxury real estate market, the agent didn’t hesitate: the bespoke pool was placed first on the luxury amenity list. Not merely for its striking visual design, but for how flawlessly it performed. Silent, perfectly balanced, and requiring minimal maintenance from the owners.
That is the ultimate reward when you treat hidden technical engineering with the exact same care as the visible architectural aesthetics. It shows.
